Gears 5 is a third-person cover shooter built around weighty weapons, roadie-running between cover, and close-range bursts of chainsaw-and-shotgun chaos. The campaign mixes linear firefights with larger explorable spaces, while co-op, Horde, Versus, and Escape modes give it plenty to do beyond the story. Its best moments come from the contrast between heavy tactical positioning and loud, messy combat against aggressive enemy waves.
